How GST is calculated in Australia

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a flat 10% tax on most goods and services sold in Australia. You can work it out two ways:

  • Adding GST: multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.1. A $200 job becomes $220, and the GST is $20.
  • Removing GST: divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.1. A $220 invoice is $200 before GST, so the GST part is $20. A quick shortcut is to divide the total by 11 to get the GST component.

A common mistake is to take 10% off a GST-inclusive price. That gives $22 on a $220 invoice, which is wrong. The GST inside $220 is $20, because GST is 10% of the pre-GST price.

Who needs to charge GST?

Businesses must register for GST once their GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year ($150,000 for non-profits). Taxi and ride-share drivers must register regardless of turnover. Once registered, you add GST to taxable sales, show it on tax invoices, and report it on your Business Activity Statement (BAS). You can usually claim back the GST you paid on business purchases as GST credits.

What's GST-free?

Some items carry no GST, including most basic food, many medical and health services, some education courses, childcare, and exports. If you're unsure whether something is taxable, check the ATO's GST guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out GST from a total price?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 11. For example, $330 ÷ 11 = $30 GST, so the price before GST is $300.

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the price by 1.1. For example, $450 × 1.1 = $495, which includes $45 GST.

Is GST always 10%?

Yes. The GST rate in Australia has been 10% since it was introduced on 1 July 2000. Some items are GST-free or input-taxed, so no GST is charged on them.

When do I have to register for GST?

When your GST turnover is $75,000 or more a year ($150,000 for non-profit organisations), or if you provide taxi or ride-share services.
