What this calculator includes

  • Income tax at the 2026–27 resident rates above.
  • Low income tax offset: up to $700 off your tax if you earn under $66,667.
  • Medicare levy of 2%, reduced if you earn under about $35,000. Untick the box if you're exempt.
  • HECS-HELP repayments using the 2026–27 marginal system, if you tick the box.
  • Super: your employer must pay at least 12% on top of your ordinary earnings. If your job is advertised as a "package including super", choose "Included in my pay".

Why your payslip might be slightly different

Employers withhold tax from each pay using ATO tax tables, which round to the dollar and spread the year evenly. This calculator works out the tax on your income for the whole year. Small differences even out when you lodge your tax return. It doesn't include work deductions, family Medicare levy reductions for low-income families, or other offsets.

Working holiday makers and foreign residents

$135,001 – $190,00037%37%
$190,001 and over45%45%

Neither group gets the $18,200 tax-free threshold or the low income tax offset, and neither pays the Medicare levy. Working holiday maker rates apply to people on a 417 or 462 visa whose employer is registered with the ATO. These rates are unchanged from 2025–26.

Salary sacrifice

Salary sacrificing means asking your employer to pay part of your pre-tax salary into super. That money is taxed at 15% in your super fund instead of your marginal rate, so most people earning over $45,000 come out ahead. Your total concessional contributions, including your employer's 12%, are capped at $32,500 a year in 2026–27. Money in super generally can't be accessed until retirement, so only sacrifice what you won't need.

Medicare levy surcharge

If you don't have private hospital cover and your income for surcharge purposes is over $105,000 (singles, 2026–27), you pay an extra 1% to 1.5% of your income. For a $120,000 earner that's $1,200 a year, often more than a basic hospital policy costs.

For couples and families, the surcharge depends on your combined family income. The family threshold is $210,000, plus $1,500 for each dependent child after the first. If your family is over the threshold, each person without cover pays the surcharge on their own income. Choose "Couple or family" and enter your partner's income and number of children to see your figure.

0%$105,000 or less$210,000 or less
1%$105,001 – $123,000$210,001 – $246,000
1.25%$123,001 – $164,000$246,001 – $328,000
1.5%$164,001 and over$328,001 and over

Unless you choose otherwise, the calculator assumes you're an Australian resident for tax purposes and claim the tax-free threshold from one job.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on $85,000?

In 2026–27, an Australian resident earning $85,000 pays $16,020 in income tax plus $1,700 Medicare levy, leaving about $67,280 a year, or roughly $1,294 a week.

What is the tax-free threshold?

The first $18,200 of income is tax-free for Australian residents. With the low income tax offset, you effectively pay no income tax until about $22,867.

Is super taken out of my pay?

Usually not. Super is normally paid by your employer on top of your salary, at least 12% of ordinary earnings in 2026–27. Some jobs quote a total package that includes super, so check your contract.

How much tax does a backpacker pay in Australia?

Working holiday makers pay 15% on the first $45,000 they earn in 2026–27, then 30% up to $135,000. On $30,000 that's $4,500 in tax, with no Medicare levy.

Is salary sacrifice worth it?

For most people earning over $45,000, yes, if they don't need the money before retirement. Sacrificed salary is taxed at 15% instead of your marginal rate of 30% or more, plus Medicare. The calculator shows your exact gain.

What's my marginal tax rate?

It's the tax you pay on your next dollar of income. The calculator shows it including Medicare and HELP, which is what actually comes out of a pay rise.
